Yahoo Security Email Scam . . .

•March 28, 2012 • 2 Comments

Good Day …

This morning I signed into one of my Yahoo mail accounts only to find an email from what I thought was Yahoo Security asking me to verify my email account information going on to say that if this email was not addressed my email account would be deleted.. .. further asking for passwords and birth date.  Hmmmm  being the wary person that I am, I did a search to find the origin of this email … at first the search indicated that this was a Yahoo corporate ISP … but that was not enough for me and I traced the header.

Surprise, surprise ….this is what I found…

The source IP address is 41.139.99.116.

Geo-Location Information

Country Nigeria
State/Region 05
City Lagos
Latitude 6.4531
Longitude 3.3958
Area Code

Whois:

The IP address 41.139.99.116 appears to have been assigned by the African Network Information Centre (AfriNIC). AfriNIC is the Regional Internet Registry (RIR) for the Africa region.

DO NOT SEND YOUR PERSONAL DETAILS OF YOUR EMAIL ACCOUNTS JUST BECAUSE THERE IS A PICTURE OF YAHOO IN THE HEADER or for that matter, any email provider … I am sure that they do not have security offices in Lagos, Africa … I have further sent all of this information to my favorite site SNOPES for them to investigate.

Be safe … be well and always be vigilant with sharing any of your personal information, even when the source seems to be legitimate.

Cheers!!!

How Many Facebook Friends Do You Have?

•March 22, 2012 • 2 Comments

Study Links Narcissism and Facebook Activity

For the average narcissist, Facebook is a tool that may promote anti-social behavior.

Hmmmm, narcissist . . .a person who is overly self-involved, and often vain and selfish.

Facebook “offers a gateway for hundreds of shallow relationships and emotionally detached communication,” according to study by Western Illinois University professor Christopher Carpenter.

The study was published this month in Personality and Individual Differences, the official journal of the International Society for the Study of Individual Differences. Read More

The final comment in this article really says it all . . .  Social media sites, particularly Facebook and Twitter, have long been criticized for being vehicles for meaningless relationships, and have recently been mentioned in connection with making bullying easier and more pervasive.

How many Facebook friends do I have????   None . . . I don’t even own a Facebook account.

The call had gone out . . . a new baby long tail macaque was born at one of our local wildlife parks . . . they needed a name.

The name came about when I decided to investigate what I could come up with when I Google searched the number 12.

Twelve is a significant number for the little monkey because Saros, as he is now known, was born on January 12, 2012.  I went to Wikipedia looking for words that were associated with the number 12.

I came up with the name Saros, which is an old Babylonian term for a unit of measurement that was adopted by the Greeks, when they were trying to figure out how to calculate eclipses.  I decided to enter the competition with the name I thought would be a winner . . . and it was.

And what, you may be asking, did I win for entering this competition?  Let me say that I am an avid animal lover and what could be more fitting than to spend a day with all of the inhabitants at the wildlife park, including getting to meet Saros.  I am looking forward to my visit and meeting the little guy who inspired me to find a name for him.

When Is It Really . . . Real??

Greetings World!!!

How many times have you opened your email account only to find that it has been inundated with messages about fantastic stories that just seem too unbelievable to be true?  Have you ever received an email from the Irish Lottery letting you know that you have won millions of dollars or a letter from a solicitor in South Africa wanting to share their money with you?  How about those great pass on emails letting you know that Microsoft wants to give away money . . . if you just forward the message to your entire contact list?

Before you hit that “send” button, let me introduce you to a website that takes the guesswork out of knowing fact from fiction.  I make it a point, and I am hoping that some of you do the same, to check the validity of messages before passing them on because, let’s face it, isn’t it just polite not to pass on and clog up family and friends email boxes with spam and junk?

Head on down to snopes.com the definitive Internet reference source for urban legends, folklore, myths, rumors, and misinformation.  I can’t tell you just how often I have used this resource to ask the question . . . is it really . . . real?

Perhaps if we start trash binning these little gems of misinformation, they will eventually go away . . . well, one can always dream now can’t we???

For all you ghouls and goblins . . . a little of my rather dark poetry.

A VAMPIRE’S LULLABYE

Now I lay me down to rest

While thoughts abound of evenings conquests

Closing out the rays of light

And wait again for blessed night

The taste of blood still lingers sweet

Upon my lips . . . I feel the heat

Unsuspecting prey excites my soul

The thrill of the hunt . . . one thought . . . one goal

An innocent I shall take to sate my need

First sweet taste of an evening’s feed

Hear me brother . . . mark me well

My kiss will send you straight to hell

Listen sister . . . hear my plea

Do not resist or try to flee!

As soon as day begins to end

My need shall call . . . I shall attend

To quench my nocturnal thirst again

While moonlight bathes the sky . . . AMEN!

The beauty of the evening

Drew me out last night

The moon and stars were shining

Much to my delight . . .

As I sat and pondered

A chill did find my face

Within a matter of minutes

The frost I could not erase

It made my green eyes water

And my nose turned red

Shivers started at my toes

And ended on my head . . .

I tried hard to ignore the cold. . .

“my, a drink would be appealing” . . .

While all the while my ears, I fear

Were losing all their feeling

I thought about what folks had said

Let your mind and body free

Determined I was to open up

And let the night seduce me

I could not take this any more

The wind chill froze my tears

The temperature hovered at 10 degrees

T’was the coldest eve in years

I stumbled back into the house

I could not feel my feet

A large cup of coffee poured

While relieved to feel the heat

If you ponder Christmas Eve

And live where it is cold

Remember hats and scarves and gloves

. . . along with friends of old!!!!

Healing with Lavender . . .

•October 31, 2011 • 2 Comments

The valuable therapeutic oil produced by lavender flowers can be used to treat troubles of the heart and mind. It is widely used by herbalists and aromatherapists to treat depression, but its healing properties also run to pain relief of a more physical kind. As a massage oil lavender relaxes muscles and eases tension. Its strong antiseptic properties effectively heal conditions such as acne or sunburn.

Lavender has been used throughout history for its mystical properties . . .
Lavender is the sacred scent of the Celtic month of the Willow Moon (April 15 to May 13). Picking lavender during the full Moon enhances its magickal powers.

The Romans burned lavender over hot coals to surround a new mother and child with the scent of compassion.

The ancient Greeks dedicated lavender to Hecate, their goddess of witches, sorcerers and enchantment.

Sprigs of lavender were worn by medieval monks to banish evil spirits.

Active ingredients of lavender

The combination of compounds that make up lavender contribute to its legendary healing powers.

Alcohol ~ Lavender oil cotains up to 50 percent of the alcohol linalol. Linalol helps to kill bacteria and viruses. It also helps to heal burns, wounds and sores.

Ketones ~ Ketones are compounds that help relieve pain, build new skin tissue and reduce inflammation. They also have a sleep-inducing effect. Ketones can be toxic, so lavender that contains an amount above 35 percent should be avoided. Diabetics, epileptics and pregnant women should avoid them completely.

Esters ~ Esters are compounds that ease swelling and soreness, prevent muscle spasms, fight fungal infections and prevent scarring. They also help to regulate your moods, preventing you from experiencing depression and hysteria.

Lavender is one of the few essential oils that can be applied undiluted.

I have a spray that I mist on my pillows and bedclothes . . . it has such a calming effect that I drift off to sleep with little resistance.
